New Harbor Artist Marcia Brandwein's work, primarily oil paintings, will be displayed in her exhibit “In the Moment” at Savory Maine Restaurant in Damariscotta June 17 through July 28. The public is invited to a reception for the artist on Friday, June 26 from 3-5 p.m. Sweet and savory finger foods will be served and wine and beer will be available for purchase.

Brandwein has been coming to Maine for the past 35 years, but recently began making New Harbor her home half of the year. The rest of the year she and her husband Dan live in White Plains, New York, where she attends classes for figure at the Art Students League and Reilly Center in White Plains, and the Greenwich Art Society.

Brandwein has been juried into many art shows, including the Bendheim and Sandra Morgan galleries in Greenwich, Connecticut, and the Pound Ridge Library. She is a member of the Katonah Museum of Art, the Greenwich Art Society and ArtsWestchester.

Here in Maine she paints with plein air groups and shows extensively. Solo shows at Miles Memorial Hospital, Rising Tide, The First bank, Pemaquid Watershed and the Damariscotta River Grill.

Brandwein was guest artist at the Pemaquid Gallery in 2013, a member of Art Collector Maine, River Arts, Boothbay Region Art Foundation and Portland Art Gallery. This year her pastels will be shown at Saltwater Artists Gallery in Pemaquid.

Brandwein received her BFA degree from Pratt Institute for Illustration, and her love of drawing is evident in her graphite and pastel renderings of local scenes. Her career as a textile designer for home and hotel has given her the opportunity to travel the world and work with artisans in Israel, China, Portugal, Italy, England and France.

This immersion into other cultures gives her inspiration, which carries into her work. Pattern and color became her strength and influence her current work as she translates nature using a similar technique. Her oil paintings are bold, and her work is very direct, creating design and pattern from the shadows and depth of field.
