Marilyn Greene Hague, 83, of Capitol Island, Southport, Maine and previously Seabrook Island, South Carolina, died peacefully Jan. 16, 2018 in the company of her loving family.

Marilyn was born in Providence, Rhode Island and was the daughter of Ray and Marjorie Greene and the sister of the late Marshall and Julie Greene. Marilyn was raised in Barrington, Rhode Island and attended Lincoln School.  After graduating from Wheaton College, she married the late Jay Hague and was a teacher at New Canaan Country School. Jay and Marilyn had two children, Tim and Susan, whom they raised in Redding, Connecticut.

Marilyn’s roots in Boothbay date back to her childhood when she would visit “Uncle Harry” on Mouse Island. So it was quite a blessing when she found out that Jay had roots on Capitol Island. They loved their summers in the harbor reconnecting with family and old friends.  Marilyn could often be found at the Boothbay Country Club back when it was still nine holes or at her regular tennis game on Capitol. She bravely took the helm of the “Back Nine” when few women her age would and cherished days visiting the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens with her grandchildren, introducing them to one of her lifelong passions.

Throughout her life, Marilyn enjoyed wonderful friends and experiences at her homes in Hazelton and Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, Redding, Connecticut, Seabrook Island, South Carolina and, most recently, Denver, Colorado.  She touched the lives of all who knew her and shared her various passions with a wonderful array of friends. Some met her walking her beloved golden retrievers, while others met her on the golf course or tennis court, where her kind demeanor belied her competitive spirit. She volunteered at various preschools and churches, in each place she called home, and was always eager to lend a hand or a smile to a friend in need

However, the place she held most dear in her later years was her summer cottage on Capitol Island where she enjoyed days on the porch reminiscing, watching the lobstermen pull their traps and waving to friends as they sailed by. This was the one place where her entire family was sure to visit, friends popped in and out the door, and when her speech failed her, a smile was worth a thousand words.

Marilyn is survived by her daughter Susan and her husband Bob and their daughters, Claire and Sydney, of Evergreen, Colorado, as well as son Tim and his wife Beth and their twins, Caroline and Walker, of Washington, D.C. Though her siblings and husband had passed, she was blessed to be very close to her nieces, Lisa, Linda and Jennifer; her nephews, Bill and Jeff; and extended family and amazing lifelong friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wooster School, c/o John and Marilyn Hague Scholarship Fund, 91 Miry Brook Road, Danbury, CT 06811. www.woosterschool.org /donate – note Hague scholarship in comments.
