Gold/Smith Gallery will be presenting “My House and Garden,” a series of painting/collages by John Vander, August 1 though September 3.

These are all works done this past winter and spring at the Vander’s new Italian residence, a 13th century convent, just outside the ancient walled Tuscan city of Lucca.

“The work is an adjustment to a new studio, a new residence and is about the atmosphere, light, changes in the weather,” Vander said. “I used collage because the process seemed to parallel the process of making a home in such an antique structure. Made of pieces of painted paper in colors so vivid they almost look day-glow, they are an homage to the tradition of art inspired by the Mediterranean.”

The gallery will be celebrating John Vander’s new exhibit with a reception at the gallery Saturday, Aug. 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. with wonderful food, wine and a jazz pianist, too.

Gold/Smith Gallery is located at 41 Commercial Street, Boothbay Harbor. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Sundays noon to 5 p.m.
