For Anne Alexander, joining Stable Gallery is a “return to childhood roots.”  In years past, Anne would visit the gallery every summer with her grandmother. Her father, grandfather, and great-grandmother all graduated from Lincoln Academy. Her roots are deep and strong. Alexander, with her ceramic shell sculptures, is one of the artists who successfully juried into the Stable Gallery for the 2016 season. 

 

This year, six artists met the jurists’ criteria for acceptance. These artists will be highlighted monthly, and their work shown throughout the gallery’s season along with the 30-plus returning artists. The new artists bring variety of media and subject matter.

 

Edwin Hawkes carves finely crafted, wooden birds. Edwin’s work is half commission and half driven by his personal favorites. Using different types of wood, Edwin challenges himself to learn about the wood and birds during his creative process.

 

Tom Stuart has “a desire to make something small and more tangible than countertops and sinks which is how I started working with concrete.”  With a background in wood working and metal work, Tom has always been creating.  “Now I have more ideas than I know what to do with!”  Tom’s concrete trays, cardholders, vases, and other useful items are on display with more items coming.

 

Laura Freeman creates human forms as ceramic sculpture.  Laura is most interested in what the viewer brings to her art and as a result, her sculptures are very approachable. It’s tempting to pick them up and consider them from different angles.

 

Marcia Brandwein is an oil painter of natural landscapes in all seasons. After a career creating textiles in factories worldwide, Marcia has returned to painting full time.  Her inspiration comes from her Maine surroundings of “brilliant vistas, colors and textures.”  Her strength is color and composition that supports her intention of expressing the “emotion of the moment”.

 

Susan Perrine “look(s) for materials to harvest and that gives me a reason to be out in the woods. I use twigs and saplings to weave large structures. I also weave very small objects: a handwoven cloth book includes horse hair and porcupine quills.” The gallery is showing Susan’s handwoven textiles, twig braided bracelets, and twig trellises.  

 

Each month through mid-October, Stable Gallery highlights a different group of new and returning artists in the main gallery. 

 

Receptions are held from 5 to 7 p.m. on the second Friday of each month. The public is welcome to come meet the artists and view their work.

 

Stable Gallery is located at 26 Water Street, Damariscotta is open daily 10 a.m. to  5 p.m. now through mid-October.
