News and Notes from The Community Center

Tue, 10/17/2017 - 10:00am

The van trip this past weekend was a roaring success. Attendees were members of the Just Sew group and ranged in age from teens to elders. We went to West Gardiner where a show of at least 120 Quilts was held at the West Gardiner Fire Station. Lunch afterwards at the A-1 Diner was the icing on the cake. Keep watching, as we will hit the road again soon. In our planning: matinees at the Portland Stage Company. They happen on Thursday afternoons and the performance will be free with participants paying for their own lunches.

Also this weekend, we had a tasty session with Dr. Phillips on Healthy Eating with a concentration on lowering blood sugar. A member of the group filmed the program and we will be putting it up online soon. The next program in the series will focus on beating hypertension through healthy eating. Again, Patty will demonstrate cooking techniques and there will be wonderful food to eat. All are welcome to come and learn the joy of eating for good health.

We appreciate the way that The Community Center seems to have become foremost in the minds of the people who live in the area. Each day some wonderful gift comes through our doors --- flowers from donors gardens, gently used books to share, yarn and fabrics our stitchers use to create items to sell in the Boutique, baked goods to treat others who stop in to play games or take classes or chat, and the instructors who donate their time and talent. Most amazing is the money that is dropped in our donation jars—the fuel that keeps us going and makes it possible for us to remain cost-free to our participants. We thank you, one and all.

Don’t forget: Seniors 62 and over walk free at the Y on Tuesday and Thursday. Call to be picked up by our van or for information about all of our offerings. 633-9876.
