News and Notes from The Community Center

Something is afoot. Changes are coming. We are scurrying about getting ready for construction that will take place over the next weekend. Be sure to drop in on Monday, Jan. 22 for a big surprise . . .

We are beginning a partnership with Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Mid-Coast Maine and are excited to be “the site” for their Site-Based Mentoring Program in which they partner with high school teens who, when selected, will train after school here at the Center. After the “Bigs” are trained, “Littles” are selected from local elementary schools and the Big Brothers and Big Sisters meet their Little Brothers and Little Sisters for fun and games at The Center. We will be in need of Volunteer Coordinators to be trained and to be on duty when the sessions are taking place. If you are interested in being involved, please call or come by for more information.

Our first Game Night was a big success. We had 10 game players as well as the Genealogy Group gathered to play, do research, and have fun. No one was tweeting or texting — they all put their electronics on hold and played games and talked and laughed and snacked and enjoyed each other’s company. Just like old times. We will be open each Friday evening this winter and we hope families will come to play together — we leave the electronics at the door.

And the Doll’s House. The work has begun and everyone who comes in is excited about the project. Our sewing group is anxious to make curtains, the knitters are offering to make rugs, and others have great ideas about paint color and furnishings. We are in need of someone to help with the wiring — we need light in the house — we have the wire, it just needs to be re-installed. If you have experience with doll house wiring, we would love to talk to you.

If you need the van to pick you up and take you to walk at the Y or if you need more information about our programs, call 633-9876.
