Ocean Point Column: Remembering Jim Brown

Tue, 02/13/2018 - 10:00am

The old adage “If you don’t like the weather in New England, just wait a few minutes,” certainly applies this year. The weather has consistently been erratic; one-day snow and freezing cold temperatures and the next almost spring-like temperatures with completely melting snow.

Ocean Point has had its share of high winds as well. Mary Fuller sent pictures of damage to their cottage caused by forceful winds; fortunately the damage was contained to one side of the exterior.

Exciting news in the Fischer family, Annie (Fischer) and Matt Berg gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Lennart (Lenny) Jacob Berg was born Jan. 30 weighing 9 pounds, 4 ounces. Annie and Matt are excited to introduce Lenny to the Ocean Point community this summer! Congratulations to new grandmother Joan and to Matt’s parents Eric and Claudia.

Unfortunately, the Ocean Point Community has been dealt another piece of sad news; beloved Ocean Pointer Jim Brown has recently died. Jim passed away Feb. 2 with his family by his side.

In his early years Jim served in the Army, graduated from Kent State with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education and met and married his late wife Barbara which in turn led to his introduction to Ocean Point.

Jim had the good fortune of spending summers at Ocean Point with Barbara and their four children Betsy, Bob, Barry and Bill for many years. When Jim and Barbara were no longer able to spend the entire summer, they continued to return for several weeks of the season.

Jim embodied the spirit of Ocean Point and its residents; he was kind, caring and thoughtful, with a great sense of humor. He loved his family, church and community.

His dedication and service to the Ocean Point community was never ending. Not only did Jim serve in the role of MC for the Fourth of July Parade for many years but he also served as president of the Wilson Chapel for 20 years; and what youngster didn’t learn the game of softball from Jim Brown? Under his guidance and coaching Jim would be on the mound every Wednesday evening for kid’s softball, never missing the opportunity to volunteer his time and talents to the community.

Jim will surely be missed and we offer our condolences to his daughter Betsy and son in law Bruce, his son Bob and wife Mary, his son Barry and wife Kim and his son Bill and wife Rhoda and Jim’s grandchildren: Nicole, Matthew, CJ, Sara, Carolyn, McKenna, Rio and Kai. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on July 8 at the Wilson Memorial Chapel, Ocean Point Maine. Donations may be made in Jim’s name to the Wilson Memorial Chapel, Ocean Point Colony Trust or the charity of your choice.

The Cumberland Woodbank recently held their banquet celebrating 10 years of providing heat to keep Mainers warm. A portion of the money raised this year was given in memory of Ted Kern who was a longtime volunteer to the organization; there was a nice picture in the local paper of John Hankinson and his daughter Audrey who also volunteer for the organization.

The “What’s Nude in Boothbay Harbor?” exhibit is currently being held at Studio 53 Art Gallery with two Ocean Pointers participating in the event, Mary Lou Lazos of Decker Reef Road and Dick Alden.

Belated Happy Birthday to two special Ocean Pointers celebrating their birthday recently, Holly Honor and Lanny Whitehouse. Hope you both enjoyed your special day!

    Have a great week!
