The Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library’s October Artist of the Month is Dana Groff Jr. of Jackson, Tennessee.

Groff was born and raised in Tampa, Florida, and began drawing and sketching from the moment he could hold a pencil. He developed his natural talent with at Lambuth University in Jackson, Tennessee, where he earned a BA in fine arts. After 40 years in Tampa, Groff relocated to Tennessee.

He now visits the Boothbay Harbor region every other summer.

Groff describes his acrylic and mixed-media eclectic art style as “contemporary realism,” showcasing his affinity for the power and beauty of creation, particularly the natural with photo subjects in wildlife, coastal seascapes — including those of the Boothbay Harbor region, the human form, and man-made subjects.

“As a painter and illustrator, I consider myself a contemporary realist without a set style. Hence, my work appears ‘freestyle’,” Groff said. “Visual art is really all that I have ever known and it's always been my own brand. I've never had the need for formal training. No doubt, I've been blessed with an inherent knowledge and skill from my Lord above. I tend to lean toward some techniques and applications, but for the most part, I remain a student of discovery. While my preferred painting medium is acrylic, I also mix mediums and dabble in oil, on occasion."
