Painting Monhegan plein air with Philip Frey

Registration deadline is May 12
Mon, 04/03/2017 - 7:45am

Join artist Philip Frey for a four day plein air workshop on iconic Monhegan Island where days will begin early, painting on location. This will be an intensive workshop, plein air painting and drawing skills at the intermediate level are required.

Emphasis will be placed on perceptual painting: color, light and movement. Students will explore color theory and the elements of good design through specific assignments and daily one-on-one instruction. Frey paints in oil, but has experience with acrylic, watercolor and dry media. Bring your medium of choice. To prepare for the next day, demos and critiques will be held during the afternoon session with a break mid-day.

The schedule ~ June 12: arrive 2 p.m., demo from 3-5 p.m., slide talk after dinner; June 13 and 14: 8 a.m. to noon - paint, lunch and break, demo from 3-5 p.m.; June 15 - 8 a.m. to noon - paint, lunch, depart.

Monhegan Island is a beautiful and rugged island 10 miles off the coast. Come prepared for unpredictable Maine weather (wind, sun, bugs and rain), bring warm clothes, hat, rain gear, waterproof shoes, bug spray, sunblock and water.

Participants should be hearty: ready to trek over rugged terrain, and around the island. In the case of rain, we will paint indoors or under cover outside. For more about the island, visit http://monheganwelcome.com.

Tuition is $450. Pre-registration is required. The deadline is May 12, but class size is limited and accommodations fill up fast on the island so register early. Register forms are on Frey’s website under “workshops” - http://philipfrey.com. Email Frey about the five percent workshop discount: info@philipfrey.com.

Students are responsible for their own accommodations and transportation to and from the ferry of their choice departing from Boothbay Harbor: www.balmydayscruises.com; New Harbor: www.hardyboat.com; or Port Clyde: www.monheganboat.com.
