Boothbay Region High School track teams capped off a solid season with some award-winning performances at the state meet in Dover-Foxcroft on Saturday, June 3.

Senior Angie Perkins was crowned Class C state champion in the high jump. Perkins has been a standout performer for BRHS in her last three seasons, placing among the all-time Seahawk top ten list in both track and field events. But an October 2016 concussion during a soccer match sidelined Perkins for most of this school year. This track season, because of her head injury, Perkins has taken a less competitive approach to the sport. That all changed two weeks ago at the Mountain Valley Conference meet, where Perkins not only jumped, she won  her second straight conference high jump title.  On June 3, Perkins won the State Class C high jump title, as well, with a 5-0 jump. She heads to Massachusetts this weekend to compete in the New England Championships and for another opportunity to break the BRHS high jump record.

Draco Peaslee, who led all BRHS scorers this season with 177 points, placed third in the 100-meter and fourth in the 200-meter at the state meet.

“Draco Peaslee capped off an amazing season at states. Draco is the first male sprinter that we have had place at a state championships in a very long time. Over the course of the season, Draco also managed to set a new school record in the 100-meter and ran the second fastest 200-meter time in school history,” Coach Nick Scott wrote in an email.

Scott reports that several other BRHS athletes also performed well at the state meet.

“Jay Hasch wrapped up an amazing season by placing 3rd in the high jump. Over the course of the season, Jay jumped as high as 6 feet, which ties him for 2nd on the Seahawk Top 10 list.  The school record of 6-2 seems to be well within his reach next year. Jay also competed in the javelin yesterday, throwing a near PR and placing in the middle of the pack.”

Loren Genrich outperformed her eighth place seed in the long jump and finished fifth overall. Genrich was the season high scorer for the women’s team and earned the female Most Valuable Player award.

“Blake Erhard had a big day in the 800-meter placing 4th despite running in the slower heat of the day.  Blake negative split his race, set at new PR of 2:10.78 and just missed the 10th spot on the Seahawk Top 10 list by .08 seconds.”

“Kyle Ames ran a strong anchor position for both the 4x800m and 4x400m relay teams yesterday.  Bayly Gaughan-Carrasco also ran a leg of both relay teams and both of his performances were personal bests.”

“Connor Demmons threw a big PR of almost four feet in the discus and nearly found himself on the podium.”

“Nick Morley became the first athlete in a very long time to compete in pole vault at the state championships.”

The team officially ended the season with an awards ceremony on Monday night, where every athlete was honored, as well as departing coach Bryan Dionne.

Genrich and Peaslee were named  MVPs, Demmons and Wright earned Coaches Awards and Reagan Cola and Erhard were named Most Improved.
