Dear Editor:

I write in response to the letter, “Saddened.” Mr. Prose may have forgotten that the Boothbay Opera House was not so long ago, an absolutely dilapidated, vacant mess before the current "powers that be" resurrected it.

The woman who created and forged that monumental effort was and has always been totally devoted to her community. For a long time, she served Boothbay and the opera house as a literal full time volunteer. When most thought the opera house was “beyond saving,” she proved them wrong. She has single-handedly, painstakingly and lovingly restored the former peeling eyesore and behemoth, not only to its former glory, but to a place that attracts both natives and visitors to enjoy world class entertainment at a very affordable price.

She alone sweated the details of this and deserves her community's gratitude and praise, though she would reject both. At every opportunity, she has supported causes that edify her community, including leadership and primary fundraising roles with the historical society and land trust. She has given the better part of her time and her effort to what is good for Boothbay. For anyone to claim otherwise is presumptuous and totally misinformed.

Cathy Sherrill is a credit to her community and Boothbay owes her a huge debt of gratitude, not criticism.
