Red’s Eats already attracts patrons from far and wide to queue up for its famous lobster roll. But if the roll was any secret to readers of Esquire, it is no more.

The magazine’s September 2014 issue gives a shout-out to the food stand at the corner of Route 1 and Water Street in Wiscasset, in the article, “The United States of Sandwiches.”

The piece describes the local lobster roll in detail: “At Red’s Eats ... they mix the tender knuckle meat with claw and tail meat, then lay a tail on top and serve it with melted butter and homemade cocktail sauce.” Quality and distribution of lobster are  key to a great lobster roll, the article states.

“We are thrilled and honored to be recognized by this outstanding magazine,” co-owner Deborah Gagnon of Dresden writes in a press release.

Esquire is the latest in a host of publications and other media outlets to put a spotlight on Red’s Eats, including the Travel Channel, Gagnon said in a brief interview on Aug. 28, feet from the lunchtime line. She has also just heard from Subaru’s magazine Drive, Gagnon said.

The accolade from Esquire came as a surprise when she heard from the magazine a couple months ago, Gagnon said. She also received a note from Jessie Kissinger, listed at the end of the article as one of its researchers. The note said Kissinger had come to Red’s Eats and loved the roll she had there, Gagnon said.
