Reining in filthy-rich ‘nonprofits’
Dear Editor:
At this time, organizations that are tax exempt under Section 501 (c) (3) must be “religious, charitable, scientific, literary or educational.” This is a deliberately vague and ridiculously broad prescription for all kinds of abusive activity by so-called “scientific and educational enterprises” such as CMBG. CMBG is single-handedly proving that a complete rewrite of the laws respecting our tax-exempt sector are in order, and the Boothbay Selectmen should appeal to the state of Maine, and beyond, for help.
The solution is simple: withhold the tax-exempt status of all 501 (c) (3) organizations until the real impacts of their activities are clearly defined, measured, and monitored annually.
