Rocktide, Mine Oyster win top awards at Claw Down

    The Rocktide Inn won the Judges Award and The World is Mine Oyster won the People's Choice Award at the third annual Claw Down Chefs' "Lobster Bite" Competition held Thursday, Sept. 18 at Ocean Point Marina. Click here for the complete photo gallery.

    Rocktide head chef Dwayne Whitelocke prepared the Rocktide Popover with Maine lobster, blueberry cognac jam, mousseline sauce and three cheese crumble.

    Mine Oyster executive chef Steve Richards prepared Crispy Fried Maine Lobster Gruyere Mac ‘n’ Cheese with truffled "Back Yard Farms" tomato concasse and lobster Choron sauce.

    Winner of the new award, the Chefs' Choice Award, as voted on by the participating chefs, was Boothbay Harbor Country Club executive chef Jeremy Donovan who presented a Peruvian-style Maine Lobster ceviche, with mango, avocado, tostada and brown butter crema.

    A total of 18 chefs participated in Thursday's Claw Down. Over 400 people were in attendance.

    Chefs Whitelocke and Richards will now represent the Boothbay region in the Lobster Chef of the Year competition at Maine's premier food and wine event, Harvest on the Harbor, in Portland Oct. 22-25.

    Celebrity judges for the event were Cal Hancock, president of the Hancock Gourmet Lobster Co.; Cathy Billings, author of "The Maine Lobster Industry — A History of Culture, Conservation and Commerce”; and Christopher Papagni, former executive vice president of the International Culinary Center in New York City.

    Emcee for the event was Kerry Altiero, Maine Lobster Chef of the Year for 2012 and Best Farm-to-Table Chef in 2013. He is also the owner of Cafe Miranda and Headacre Farms in Rockland.
