Ronald Salter is Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library’s (BHML) July Artist of the Month. Salters' beautiful paintings will be displayed July 1-30 in the library’s upstairs multi-purpose room.

Salter, a Winchester, Massachusetts resident, and recent professor emeritus of Tufts University, holds an undergraduate degree in fine arts from Wayne State University and a doctorate in German literature from the University of Michigan with a dissertation on expressionist art and poetry.

After many years of an almost exclusively scholarly involvement with the arts, most of his research and publications focus on the relations of literature and the visual arts, he returned to active painting in the mid-1980s under the tutelage of the North Shore landscape artist Paul Goodridge.

As a plein air painter of landscapes and seascapes, Salter finds his favorite motifs in rural New England, especially in the Boothbay region where he spends his summers. His summer studio at Ocean Point in East Boothbay is located on Salter Lane (Wall Street), is open by appointment.

“When people ask me why I paint, I may simply say that it is one of the most pleasurable, challenging and rewarding activities I can imagine,” Salter said. “If art is indeed a harmony parallel to nature, as Cézanne had noted, then the creative act may, on the most elusive level, put us magically in touch with the life-affirming mystery of creation itself. My personal preference for landscape may unwittingly feed on the archetypal search for the lost paradise.”

Salter is a current member of the Boothbay Region Art Foundation.

The library is located at 4 Oak Street in Boothbay Harbor.
