Saddened

Dear Editor:

I was saddened to notice last week that the powers that be at the Opera House decided to paint over the mural that adorned the retaining wall at the back of their parking lot.

The mural, which had withstood the vicissitudes of time for 15 years, was painted by our local youth (my kids included) under the direction of Diane Dorbin, during her tenure as director of children's programs at the library. It was whimsical, colorful and made me smile every time I walked by it.

Maybe it was just a straight-forward decision on the part of the Opera House to use up some leftover gallons of ugly grey paint that prompted the defacement, but I can't help but look at it as par for the course for our little community. With so much energy and money being spent trying to turn the region into a Hollywood set designer's idea of a coastal Maine village, it's no surprise that there's no place left for something as crude and primitive as public art created by our children.
