Sarmanian seeks fourth term on Edgecomb select board

It seems nine years as a selectman isn’t enough for Jack Sarmanian. Edgecomb’s select board chairman is seeking a fourth term. Sarmanian, 78, is a retired social worker and has been a Red Cross volunteer since 2010. Last month, he wasn’t sure whether to seek another term.

“I wanted to think it through and make sure I wanted to continue for another term,” he said. “There is more work to be done and we have a good team in place with the other selectmen Mike (Smith) and Ted (Hugger). So I decided to run again.”

In Edgecomb, selectmen serve three-year terms.

Other municipal officers seeking re-election are Claudia Coffin, town clerk and treasurer; Deb Boucher, tax collector; and Scott Griffin, road commissioner. All three are circulating nomination papers. All three offices have one-year terms.

So far, no one is interested in running for planning board or school committee. Planning board member David Nutt’s term expires this year. He won three years ago as a write-in candidate and hasn’t decided whether to seek another term.

“I don’t know. I hadn’t really thought much about it,” he said.

According to Smith, school officials are recruiting a candidate to run for school committee in the May election. School committee and planning board terms are for three years.

Nominations papers are due March 28. The election is Friday, May 19 at the municipal building.
