Boothbay girls and boys play quarterfinal games Monday, Feb. 15 at the Augusta Civic Center
Fri, 02/12/2016 - 10:00am

Boothbay girls vs. Carrabec, 1 p.m.

The second-seeded Lady Seahawks will take on the seventh-seeded Carrabec Cobras in a Class C South quarterfinal.

Boothbay squeaked by the Cobras, 27-20, in North Anson on Jan. 23 in a game Coach Tanner Grover said his team had trouble getting its rhythm on offense. He also said Carrabec played aggressive defense and competed on every play. Page Brown, the leading scorer in the Mountain Valley Conference this season at 17.3 points per game, did the bulk of the scoring against the Cobras, getting 18 points. Freshman Faith Blethen, who scored 11.8 points per game this season, struggled against Carrabec, making only one of 10 shots from the floor.

The Cobras come into Monday's game having won their preliminary game against Hyde, 58-38, on Feb. 10. Kate Stevens led Carrabec with 17 points.

Regarding Monday's game, Grover said in an email, "Carrabec is a solid team. They defend well and have a core of seniors that can really play. Several of those kids played significant roles on Carrabec's 2014 team that went to the state championship. Mickayla Willette is a tough slasher that we will need to contain.

"Advancing in the tourney really comes down to defense and rebounding. Fortunately, those are two of our strengths. If we play the way we are capable of, and have a little bit of luck on our side, it should be a fun week."

Boothbay boys vs. Madison, 4 p.m.

Monday's game will be the third go-around for the Boothbay and Madison boys this season. Boothbay won at Madison, 57-54, in December and the Bulldogs won at Boothbay, 63-52, on Feb. 4.

In the loss to the Bulldogs, Boothbay committed 25 turnovers, shot 45 percent on two-pointers and hauled down 28 rebounds, whereas in the win at Madison, the Seahawks shot 53 percent on two-pointers, had only 20 turnovers and hauled down 46 rebounds.

Senior Abel Bryer played well in both games against Madison, scoring 20 and hauling down 17 rebounds in the win and scoring 18 and getting 10 rebounds in the loss.

Ty Greene scored 22 against Boothbay in Madison's win and the Bulldogs came into the game with a four-game win streak, including a come from behind win at Wiscasset three days before coming to Boothbay.

Coach I.J. Pinkham said in an email about Monday's game,"I feel the tournament is wide open so Madison is as good a match up as any. Their size hurt us the last game so we are going to have to do a better job on the boards to beat them. We will need a solid defensive game, because they have a number of players capable of scoring in double figures. We are always more successful when we can get out in transition, and that will be emphasized in our game plan."

    Tournament note

Because the girls and boys games are in separate sessions, fans will "probably" have to clear the stands and pay twice to see both games, according to BRHS Athletic Director Allan Crocker. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for students/seniors.
