Seahawks excel in season opener

Wed, 04/23/2014 - 8:45am

With temperatures hovering around 40 F and a light wind, last Friday’s track season opener was a chilly one. However, the Seahawks were not deterred by the weather conditions, the tough roster of B school teams they faced or the fact that several of their teammates had headed south to get a jump on spring vacation.

Veteran track athletes Robert Campbell, Hannah Brewer, Morgan Crocker, Jason Maddocks, Sinead Miller, Shane Johnson and Abel Bryer were among the day’s top performers, and newcomer freshman Angie Perkins showed she has the right stuff to be a standout as well.

Coach Nick Scott said he was quite pleased with the season opener.

”I am really impressed with the results from Friday's meet,” Scott said. “We placed very well in a KVAC meet that featured nearly all Class B schools. Several standout performances were achieved by a handful of athletes.”

Scott said former coach Ed Tostevin has compiled an "All Seahawk" team, which consists of the top 10 performances by Boothbay athletes (dating back to the 1950s) in every track event. Scott said Johnson (discus), Alamo (racewalk) and Perkins, in her high school debut, joined their present and former teammates on that all-star team on Friday night.

“Other athletes who had great nights, but didn't quite make the list include Abel Bryer who set three personal records on Friday,” Scott said, “Crocker didn't set any PRs but had an extremely strong night for this early in the season. Campbell’s finish was only 12 seconds off from his PR in the 3200 m and it was a cold night, I suspect he'll lower that time by a lot over the next month.”

“Then there was Jason who despite not feeling all that great placed in both the sprint events even though he wasn't seeded in the fast heats. He also led both the 4x100m relay and the 4x400m relays to strong finishes,” Scott said.

With a good start on the season, the Seahawks take a break from competition, but not practice. The next track meet will be held April 29 at 4 p.m. in Wiscasset.
