An estimated 1,000 people, including about 350 elementary school children and their parents, entered the Boothbay Region YMCA field house on Sunday to take advantage of free school supplies in the fifth annual “Set for Success” event.

“Students are our focus,” said program coordinator Sue Burge, president of the Boothbay Region Community Resources Council.

Bookbags, school supplies, and clothing were offered free to the students. Services, including haircuts, fingernail painting and vision exams, were also provided. Various social services agencies and nonprofit agencies were on hand to highlight programs offered to grammar school children.

Burge emphasized that the program would not be possible without contributions from community members and businesses.

“The way we get to continue this is by the goodness of our community,” said Burge.
