In Maine, Monday’s solar eclipse was only partial. In Lincoln County, it began around 1:30 p.m. and ended about 3 p.m. At the eclipse’s maximum, the moon blocked about 57 percent of the sun’s light.

The United States was treated to a rare total eclipse Aug. 21. It was the first total eclipse seen in the U.S. since 1918; the next one is April 8, 2024. Maine’s mountains and much of northern Maine will be part of the totality for that one. 

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon falls directly in the path of the sun, which is about the same size, visually, as seen from Earth.
