Southport Column: Author’s talk, school auction and more

Many thanks to Maria Doelp who gathered news and wrote this column for the past two weeks while Kit and I soaked up some warmth with friends, Joanne and George Carlisle, in San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. We managed to travel between storms, but arrived home in time for Wednesday night’s through Thursday’s snow and are now hunkered down for Tuesday night’s storm into Wednesday. Is it really March?!

It is in March that Robinson’s Wharf is to reopen after several months of being closed for renovation. The day chosen is Wednesday March 14, but they may have to wait until the storm abates and roads are clear. Perhaps snow removal will allow many islanders to celebrate there on Wednesday evening. Best to call to confirm. Work has also begun on renovating Thompson’s boat house across the street, which is great news as that old structure is a bit of an eye sore to newcomers coming onto the island.

Suzi Thayer wrote such a great article in last week’s paper about Linda Brewer, our just retired librarian. The library aides and friends gathered on Thursday last to celebrate Linda’s nearly    thirty years tenure, asking questions and hearing stories. Linda is capably succeeded by Nora Lally and assistant, Anne Maher Thompson. They, at least, will have bathroom facilities, which have replaced the coffee can Linda had to use for a while during her early librarian days.

Southporters and friends gathered in the Southport Town Hall last Sunday evening for the Southport Island Association’s (SIA) annual Ice Breaker party. Good food and libations awaited us as well as bunches of tulips, valiantly signaling spring. Thanks to all who work hard to plan and staff these events. The next SIA gathering will be May 6 for Island Clean Up. More on that event later.

March 15 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Southport Memorial Library, author Robert DeVine will talk about his two books, “Ketchup in my Veins” and “Southeast to Panama.” The first book tells tales of Mr. DeVine’s years working for the McDonald’s Corporation. I am old enough to remember the first McDonald’s in our hometown and the excitement of being able to buy a hamburger for fifteen cents. The second book tells tales of Mr. DeVine’s trip through the Panama Canal. If you know Mr. DeVine, you know he will share his experiences with gentle humor and clarity.

The sixth grade Auction, planned for March 23 at the Southport Town Hall is in need of gently used items that would be appropriate for the children to include in their auction. If you are willing to donate such items, please drop them off at the school.

Three cheers for Phil Smith who is out and about after a short hospital stay due to the flu.

If you know someone looking for a summer rental on Southport, Lynn Schafer's newly renovated cottage next to her shop ‘Possibilities’ is available from May to October. There is a sign on the property with a phone contact: 207-208-7981.
