Southport Column: A piano, a wandering cat and more

Tue, 10/10/2017 - 8:45am

Early deadline this week … thus not too much news.

However, on a exciting “note,” the Southport Memorial Library now has a baby grand piano. The piano arrived last week and will soon be ready for those who wish to enjoy playing. Thank you to Jane Southworth who donated the piano which belonged to Katherine Cook. Many of you may recall Katherine, who was the music teacher at Boothbay Region High School for many years. She also had the very successful marching band and taught music in her home. Linda Brewer at the library recalls that Katherine was still marching in the Community Band at 82. Stay “tuned” for musical events at the library, probably around the holidays.

Looking ahead the annual Veterans Day Observation and Ceremony will be at the Southport Memorial Library on Veterans Day, Saturday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. More information will be coming in future columns.

Janet Reingold clarified the sighting of a Bengal cat. It belongs to Suzi and Nick Mace and takes to wandering.

Another reminder of this week’s events, which includes the free movie showing of “Beauty and the Beast” this Saturday, Oct. 14 4 p.m. at the Southport Methodist Church. There will be popcorn … just like going to the movies on Saturday afternoons.

News from the Southport Central School is a reminder that if you are supporting their redeemable bottle and can program (hopefully you are) that you need to take a Clynk bag (or two) to fill and then return it to their receptacle and take a new bag.

Now if you have ever pictured yourself driving a school bus, now is your chance — even occasionally, just on Southport, or perhaps only sporting events. Check with Lisa Clarke at the Southport school for more information.

Newagan Seaside Inn will have their last lunch and dinner on Friday the 13th.

Robinson’s Wharf will remain open for lunch and dinner but closed on Tuesdays.

Now for some news you are waiting for … The Southport Gift Barn will close on Sunday, Oct. 22, open on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And you will love this … everything (except the consignment items) are now 30 percent off. Still some very nice gifts if you think of holiday shopping.
