This Monday morning is only insubstantial in comparison to the day before. Sunday was absolutely beautiful for boating. Today, however, it’s warm with a strong southerly breeze, light in the harbor; it is the perfect morning for a swim. Those lucky enough to enjoy it at the Southport Yacht Club, Sofia Scott, Sarah Harris, Harry Richardson, Skylar Leonhardt, Maddy Pecker, Lily Normanly, Sofia Saljanin, and Alec Fairfield, also entered the program as morning class beginner sailors. An absolutely stunning day on the water awaits all of the sailors, new and experienced.

The SYC Siblings Regatta took place Wednesday of last week, with all fifteen slots filling up with SYC families ready to prove themselves. Sibling pairs put apart their rivalries and sailed for the gold together, the “gold” of course being the glory and bragging rights of being the “Alpha-Sibling Pair.” Trevor and Annie Britton took home said rights in first place, with Jen and Shannon Killian running up in second and David and Andrew Turley in third. The Club 420 race was run by volunteers Nancy Custer-Carroll and Nuala Spillane.

Eleven sailors traveled to the Maine State Opti Regatta this week to represent SYC. The regatta was scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday Aug. 1 and 2, and the results of the SYC sailors will be in the paper next week. Representing the Southport Yacht Club are: Ryan Peterson, Will Moen, Sean Morrison, Sawyer Bates, Ava and Lucy Gauthier, Peter Bauman, Brodie Snyder, Oliver Grant, and Luke and Blake Donnellan.

The August Series of races began last week with a full race day. Max Freund and Eliza Goodell were in first for the Club 420 Advanced Class. In second was Charlie Apolinsky and Abbie Peterson. Martha Rand and Sara Morrison ended up in third with Keiran Lorentzen and Lara Hill in fourth. The Turnabout intermediate class also held race day, with Aaron Wilgren and Meredith Hill in first, Hannah McWhan and Mary Wallace in second, and Robbie Bennett and Finn Uhrich in third.

The morning class sailors went off to Powderhorn Island last week, a common but anticipated “Friday Fun Day” excursion. The kids and instructors enjoyed a morning on the beach and explored around the island, an approximate ten minute hike on the rocks. Coupled with an exciting motor boat ride out to and back from the island, it was my favorite morning class adventure this year.

Thursday, Aug. 3 is the second SJYCSF Bingo night, but my favorite Bingo night. Rather than local businesses donating prizes, the winners of Bingo will be going home with delicious, homemade desserts from “Baked Goods Bingo.” Cards, which are $3 each, run out fast, so showing up at 6:45 when the doors open is the best plan. The first numbers are called following a drum roll at 7.
