The term “B.M.D.”, Director Will Jacobs’ anagram for a “Beautiful Maine Day,” seldom made an appearance last week at the Southport Yacht Club. The new sailors of week A: Elinor Grant, Cameron Luck, David Kershaw, Graydon Smith, Natalie Gruener, Graham Anton, Edith Himes, Max Simonson, Cameron Payson, Hayes Lancaster and Gus Giampetruzzi all took swim tests on Monday and would agree that the water was cold and the breeze mirrored it.

The sun eventually did shine though, and everyone from the morning class beginners to the afternoon class intermediate and advanced sailors had excellent days on the water.

Last week the morning class kids had a motor boat trip to Indiantown Island for the weekly “Friday Fun Day.” The students and instructors hiked around, exploring the shoreline for the duration of the class. On the boat ride back the students stopped to watch seals basking in the sun.

Week B saw fewer swim tests with only three kids braving the chilly water to enter the program. Mary Cladis, Daphne Walsh and Francis Lindaman all joined the morning class beginner sailing program this Monday on a true B.M.D. and were greeted with a lovely morning sail once they had dried off.

In terms of politics, the 2017 commodore of the SJYCSF is Keiran Lorentzen, with Ryan McCann as his vice commodore. The treasurer is Jenna Peterson and the secretary is yours truly, Finnegan Wilson.

“A good commodore is four things,” Lorentzen said in his 15-second campaign speech to the afternoon class sailors, “Enthusiastic, inspirational, responsible, and cleanly shaven from the knees down. I am currently three of those things. If you elect me as your humble commodore, I can, and will, be all four.” Though McCann’s speech was, in most senses, more professional, Lorentzen won with McCann landing as runner-up and second in command.

In other exciting news, SYC Bingo night was Thursday, July 6. Many businesses in Boothbay donated prizes ranging from gift certificates to inventory items from their stores. The junior officers, from Commodore Keiran all the way down to secretary, would like to thank all of the businesses that have donated.

Adult sailing is offered every Friday at 9:30 a.m. and is an opportunity to get one on one instruction in sailing a dinghy. The price is $20 per person for the 2.5 hour session. Please sign up at the Junior Yacht Club.
