Mon, 07/17/2017 - 7:00am

It’s time once again for the Book and Bake Sale at the Southport Memorial Library, Friday, Aug. 4, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Since 1927 this has been a favorite event on Southport Island that also draws many book lovers from throughout the Boothbay region.

Books will be available until 3 p.m., but if you want any of the famed Southport cooks' baked goods, better get there at 9 a.m. People in the know start lining up before the doors open for those delicious pies, cakes, cookies, soups, condiments and more. Nothing like a homemade pie for the weekend!

And don’t forget to pick up a copy of “Southport Cooks,” the Library Aides’ just-released new cookbook. Inside you will find a selection of soups, breads and desserts from cooks around the island, including many favorites from the annual Souper Bowl Luncheon held every January at the Southport Town Hall.

And have we got books! The library sale includes plenty of hard cover and paperback fiction and mysteries, non-fiction, craft books, CDs, DVDs, puzzles, a Christmas book corner, and so much more, all for $1 to $3. The children’s corner has both paperback and hardback, starting at 25 cents and up.

Come early to get the best food and the best choice of books. The sale is one day only: Friday, Aug. 4. This event is a major fundraiser, so all are encouraged to come and support Southport’s treasured library.

Take home a book or two, and get acquainted with our services. The Southport Memorial Library is open to all residents of the Boothbay peninsula, free of charge.
