    Get ready...some wonderful fun news this week. We approach another Memorial Day on Monday the 28th as we honor our veterans and greet our neighbors again for summer.. The parade will assemble at Newagen at 8:30 a.m. with Pastor Rego giving the remembrance message. Then they will reassemble and proceed to the Southport Monument at 9:00 am where Gerry Gamage will give the message. There is a solemn moment of reverence and reflection as we witness the honored veterans marching, the community band and the scouts...truly a memorable tribute. This year will have the newly formed male singing group ... called “The Noteables” who will sing “America” (My Country, 'Tis of Thee). The group includes Gerry Gamage, Tim Hanley, Kit Sherrill, Oliver Cusano , Skip Simonds, Dean Domeyer, Dave Gregg and led by Betsey deGroff. (This is their “debut performance”). Lucky us!!

    The Southport General Store hours will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, Sunday. They are open on Monday Memorial Day from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Gift Barn will be closed ... but open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    More dates for the calendar ... Thursday, June 7 is the 18th Annual Fireman's Dinner at the Newagen Seaside Inn. Enjoy a meal prepared by Newagen's chefs and then served by Southport's finest. All the proceeds go to the Southport Fire Department. This year there is live music with Arthur Webster along with the cocktails at 5:30 p.m., dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $35 per person and pre-registration and payment is required. Call the inn at 633-5242 to make a reservation.

    Another event is planned for Father's Day on Sunday, June 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is a day for Father's and families called PaPaPalooza. Bring your dad and come to Newagen Seaside Inn for games on the back lawn like Jumbo Jenga , giant chess, shuffleboard and cornhole. Enjoy a BBQ picnic and make your own sundaes, along with several games in the vintage game room like candlepin bowling, billiards and ping pong.     Wednesday, June 6 is the Southport Central School's Spring Concert at the Southport Town Hall at 6 p.m.

    Yes ... they are open this weekend ... Oliver's Restaurant in Cozy Harbor will open for the season this Thursday for dinner at 4. Then the hours will be daily from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. The new enthusiastic cooking crew , who came from Florida, includes chef Jason Rodriguez with sous chef Brandon and cook Joshua. Chef Jason , with 20 years experience, is looking forward to the busy season at Oliver's...keeping the same menu with some new additions.

    A birthday greeting to George Ross ... he and Tracey Robinson have returned for the summer.

    Now here is a preview of a new summer activity - the Southport General Store will offer their outdoor 'space” on the second Tuesday's ( weather permitting) for an “Open Mic” evening. Your creative talents, vocal and instrumental are open for you to “share”. More information will come later...you can practice and be ready for an evening of ...entertainment and fun!

    Staying with summer preview news...Nancy Prisk has indicated that Land for Southport's Future is moving forward with Ruth's House ...watch for an announcement and date for a “gathering” ( ...hopefully around Henrdick's Head Beach area) next month to share plans and goals for this historical legacy that we all anticipate to be a vibrant and active place in the community.     Wait...here is one more important date. June 12 is primary election day at the Southport Town Hall and the polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. There are Federal, state and county candidates on the ballots. More information will be available.

    Then ... of course I met a very happy Ed Jewett at the Town Hall ... he had just returned from a very successful charity fishing tournament at the Boy Scouts of America High Adventure Sea Base in Islamorda, Florida . He had come in 2nd place (out of 25 anglers) having caught the most tarpon. The program raised over $103,000 for the Boys ( and girls) Scouts.
