The sailing class season has come to an end with its yearly closing banquet. Sailors, parents and grandparents crammed into the Southport Town Hall for the lasagna dinner. This was the evening to shine as staff, sailors and the Southport Yacht Club Junior sailing foundation reported on the successful summer.

Director William Jacobs had nothing but praise for the Junior Commodore Keiran Lorentzen and his leadership over the various fundraisers held during the summer. The classes are enhanced by the presence of the loyal helpers who arrive to coach the morning classes. It should be noted that many of these helpers go on to be instructors.

When the special awards were presented Will made sure to describe why the award is given. Morning class: Seamanship Yuji Smith, intermediate Meredith Hill Optis, Sawyer Bates 420s Nathan Chatterton. Sportsmanship, morning class, Micha Longbottom Intermediate Kimball Khetani, optis Lucas Thress, 420s. Eliza Goodell, Most improved Oliver Tineo, Intermediate class, Seamanship Meredith Hill, Sportsmanship Kimball Khetani, Optis Sawyer Bates. Most Improved morning class Oliver Tineo Intermediate Aaron Wilgren Optis Lucy Gautier advanced Lara Hill. The special awards given were the Glidden Cup to Elsa Bates, Helming Cup Abbey Thress, and Paul Copolla award to David Turley. Thanks were given to the banquet volunteers who made the dinner go smoothly.

The final events for the senior club will be held Saturday morning for the annual meeting at 10 and the Commodore's reception at 5:30 when racing awards are presented along with the notorious "Golden Shackle" award is given with much hilarity to a less than distinguished member caught making a faux pas.
