Members of the the Boothbay Region Fish and Game Association had hoped to introduce young people to outdoor skills at an open house on Saturday, May 20. According to Association President Dennis Blackman, specialists were on hand to instruct in fly fishing, archery, orienteering, boat safety and first aid.

“We had a little bit of everything,” said Blackman.

The weather was crisp and clear. The only thing missing was kids.

Blackman said he had no idea why no young people showed up for the event scheduled from 8 a.m until noon. “There are kids up here all the time,” said Blackman.

With 180 individual and family members, 20-30 young people have  participated in previous fishing events and the fall turkey shoot.

“I don’t know what happened today,” said Blackman.

Association Secretary Barry Gibson said there were several competing events including Little League games and also the tendency for youth to be over-attached to the media.

“The kids need to get out and about,”  said Gibson. “We may try to do it again in the fall.”

Sports fishermen Tom Little and Steve Rubicam came with the hope of passing on their fly fishing expertise and ended up settling for landing a few minnows the trout missed.
