St. Philip's 65th Strawberry Festival June 24

Mon, 06/12/2017 - 9:15am

St. Philip’s Church’s traditional kick-off to the summer is upon us. Come to 12 Hodge St. in Wiscasset between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 24, to experience the taste that says ‘Here comes summer’—strawberry shortcake: native strawberries, homemade biscuits, real whipped cream or Round Top ice cream—mmmmmm.  With quarts picked early that morning for sale, people can take more away for later, too.

After chowing down on one or more hot dogs, make sure to time a visit to attend the always fun, as well as delicious, noontime pie auction. Strawberry, rhubarb, blueberry, apple, chocolate, or other pies whipped up by local bakers await. It’s all in good fun and all to benefit St. Philip’s and its outreach missions.

Want the little ones to run off some steam? A children’s play area behind the church and just outside the Bargain Basement allows the young ones to run off their energy.

And speaking of energy, get those happy feet ready to move, too. At 12:30, Tonya Richardson, Zumba instructor, will be leading a half hour Zumba demonstration experience. Richardson leads classes at St. Philip’s on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. People of all ages and abilities can take part at their own level of ability. If one is curious about the exercise that’s more like a dance party, or already know and want to join in the fun, plan to be there.

Attendees should carve out time to check out the talented craftspeople’s handiwork, both inside the church hall and outside on the green. Everything from beautiful baskets to books to teas to handicrafts of various types await perusal and purchase.

A silent auction provides an opportunity to come away with gift certificates and goods from local businesses and individuals. The Wiscasset and other local towns’ businesses have generously donated wonderful items as a way to support St. Philip’s and its programs.  Bid early and often; show support for them as well as for the church.

Don’t forget to check out the popular Bargain Basement, open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There are many inexpensive finds there just waiting to be scooped up. It’s a true treasure hunter’s paradise.
