Steve Black has worked as a freelance photographer in the Boston area and presently operates a photo and art gallery on Orrs Island. His work has been exhibited in the Boston area, Sausalito, California; Lexington, Kentucky; the Boston Globe, and internationally in Holland and France.

Black traces his interest in photography and the visual arts to his early childhood experiences growing up on the Maine coast, the wonders of nature being so close at hand. Like his male ancestors who were lobstering and fishing for “keepers,” he continues to seek out all the visually interesting “keepers” his eyes can discover.

It was on Bailey Island that Black was particularly struck by his grandmother's keen appreciation of her surroundings, although or perhaps because she was totally blind. Having assumed early on the task of sharing with her what he saw, he thinks of his photographs as extensions of sight to be shared with others.

Black brings to the Southport Memorial Library a number of his unique photographs to be on exhibit from Sept.14 through Oct. 31. His works can be found at www.steveblackphotography.com.
