In support of Katahdin national monument

Sun, 05/21/2017 - 7:00am

    Dear Editor:

I am writing to support the creation of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, Maine, established in 2016. I have visited the Katahdin area a number of times. Because of its new designation as a national monument, my wife and I look forward to exploring it again this summer and will include another overnight stay in the area.

For over 60 years, starting with my family trips when I was 8, I have had the privilege of visiting scores of national monuments and parks all over the United States. I was able to do so because previous generations had the foresight to protect these many beautiful areas for public use. As I broadened my travels, I discovered that the preservation system created under President Theodore Roosevelt has become the model and envy of countries around the world. Preserving the Katahdin area for future generations is a diminishing opportunity for our generation to pay it forward.

I have followed the creation of this national monument over the years. To claim that there hasn't been extensive public input into its creation is just bogus. I urge the Department of the Interior to retain this generous gift of land and become steward of it for future generations. I, my wife, and my grandchildren will be thankful.
