Tax code makeover overdue

Tue, 12/12/2017 - 10:45am

    Dear Editor:

It appears our tax code is about to receive a makeover, and it is long overdue. The code has grown in both complexity and length since tax reform was last achieved decades ago. Those changes have led to distinct disadvantages for families by charging high rates and often requiring professional assistance just to navigate it.

With versions of tax reform bills having passed both houses of Congress, families can now look to receive some well-deserved relief. It is not very often that Congress has the opportunity to provide extra cash to workers. But that’s exactly what tax reform will do for families, allowing them to put that money toward college tuition, or a new car, or whatever investment best suits their needs.

The plan put forth by Republicans in Congress recognizes the strain that the tax code has placed on Americans. It is rare to be this close to such impactful legislation, and our representatives should do all that they can to push this plan across the line. We will owe it to leaders like Senator Susan Collins when hardworking families are able to take their paychecks home and see that they are able to keep more of their well-earned money. Tax reform will reduce economic burden and, by doing so, provide an economic boost to our communities.
