Boothbay Region High School Swim Team

Three Seahawks qualify for states in first away meet

The Boothbay Region High School Seahawks swim team had its first away meet on Dec. 10. Held at the Lewiston Y, it was against the Edward Little High School Red Eddies.

Swimming is, for the most part, an individual sport, with swimmers trying to beat their own times every time they take to the water. As the season progresses, swimmers will work to qualify for states in 2015, which requires meeting or exceeding a specific time for each individual event.

For example, if a qualifying time for the 50 yard freestyle is 25 seconds, and a swimmer manages to complete it in 24.9 seconds, that swimmer has qualified to run that specific race at states. To run in any more, they must also meet or exceed times for those events.

Several BRHS swimmers made the cut at this meet.

“We have swimmers cutting times left and right,” co-coach Don Strout said.

Swimmers that have qualified in this meet include Nicole Labrecque in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:14.80 and the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 28.90; Evy Case in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:17.87 and the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:29.18; and Karl Alamo in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:34.40.

In total the Seahawks came home with four first places, seven second places, three thirds, a fourth, two fifths and three sixths.

First places went to Evy Case in the 200 yard freestyle, Karl Alamo in the 200 yard IM, Nicole Labrecque in the 50 yard freestyle, and the relay team of Brenna Alley, Lincoln Hamblett, Evy Case and Emma Pearce in the 200 yard freestyle relay.
