A physical education teacher with 17 years’ experience is one of several new members of Boothbay Region High School’s staff this fall. Kendra Brown, an Old Town native, spent her first 17 years as a teacher at Sanford High School. She moved to Brunswick last June and applied for the vacant phys. ed. teacher’s job last summer.

Brown is a 2001 graduate of Saint Joseph’s College in Standish. When Brown entered college, she hadn’t picked a field to study. She chose physical education based on a positive experience with her Old Town High School teacher.

“Miss Hammer made a positive impression on me. She was very personable and involved with sports, and, she always presented information in a fun way,” Brown said.

In her early classes, Brown spent time getting to know her new students with team-building exercises. She teaches four periods per day. Her fall unit began with her instructing her mixed classes of boys and girls lacrosse.

In Sanford, Brown coached varsity soccer, junior varsity basketball and softball. This fall, she is trying something new. Brown is a member of the Midcoast Board of Soccer officials. “I coached soccer for 10 years and thought it was time to try something new. And it’s given me an opportunity to see the sport from a different perspective.”

Brown is enjoying her new job. She describes Boothbay as a “great place in a relaxing community.”
