Voting light in Boothbay Harbor

Fri, 05/05/2017 - 2:45pm

It was quiet at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, May 5, in the Boothbay Harbor Fire Department bay, where voting officials sat waiting to receive voters. Nick Upham, moderator of Friday’s portion of the town meeting, expected  it would likely remain quiet because all eight candidates are running unopposed. But there is also a referendum Boothbay Harbor voters need to approve or disapprove. The Boothbay Harbor footbridge, the subject of many articles and countless opinions, was temporarily fixed in February. While pedestrians may walk across the bridge, there is still much work to be done to permanently repair the under-structure and the swing bridge.

Article 4 on the ballot reads, “To see if the town will vote to authorize the Board of Selectmen to commit matching funds of up to $250,000 in the event that a Small Harbor Improvement Program (SHIP) grant is awarded to the town for the purpose of future renovations to the Boothbay Harbor footbridge.”

Voting takes place until 6 p.m. Tomorrow’s town meeting starts at 9 a.m. in the Boothbay Region Elementary School gymnasium.
