The 13th Annual Wannawaf Waffle Eating Contest drew an international field and a competitor from Serbia claimed the championship. Igor Cossack won the $200 first prize by defeating 15 other competitors. “Ozzie” of Monmouth finished second and won “The Bacon Boss,” used for cooking crispy microwave bacon. Third place went to “Teddy,” another international competitor from Bulgaria. He won a foot massage mat.

Each of the 16 competitors paid a $25 entry fee. Rounds one and two were waffles with whipped cream. Eight competitors were eliminated after round one. The field was reduced to five after round two. Rounds three and four saw competitors eat waffles and ice cream.

Each year, the competition raises money for a local organization. For the past four years, Boothbay Region Community Resource Council has been the beneficiary. This year’s proceeds will go toward the council’s Set For Success program. The contest is organized by Anya Heyl and Dick Reid, who operate The Thistle Inn.

“They are both huge supporters of ours (BRCRC),” said Sue Burge, a Set For Success volunteer. “We are totally indebted to them for what they do for us. We are all set for this year, but the proceeds will go towards 2018.”

The competition was rescheduled from  Aug. 12 to Aug. 13 due to a poor weather forecast. The event was held at Wannawaf’s Ice Cream Shop at 31 Granary Way in Boothbay Harbor.
