Way to go seniors!

A walk to remember

In the second annual Senior Walk at Boothbay Region Elementary School, all the students were on deck to “low-five” their departing upperclassmen on graduation day, June 9.

BRES Assistant Principal Tricia Campbell , who organized the event, said the walk is hosted by teachers and students at the elementary school as a way to give the seniors a chance to celebrate their success and accomplishments with them.

The BRES students, totaling around 340, and staff were lined up inside the front door and along the hallways to greet the seniors as they marched through, single file.

Campbell, with a microphone in hand, was leading the hosts with a chant, “Way to go seniors, way to go!”

Campbell had talked to her students about school spirit and pride, and told them the walk was an opportunity for seniors to reflect on their journey through their years at the elementary school. “It's a chance for (the seniors) to realize how far they've come, and their successes, and it's an opportunity for the younger kids to have something to aspire to.”

Campbell said inspiration for the event came from hearing about a number of schools across the country doing it. “Eileen King and I came across an example of it at around the same time, we had a conversation about it, and last year we said, 'Let's just do it.'”

Campbell wrote in a press release, “The seniors at BRHS are an inspiration to our students and we could not be more proud! Wear your blue and gold to show your school pride! Congratulations to the Class of 2017.”

The Senior Walk was an uplifting, inspirational way to start a day that seniors, and their younger counterparts, will remember as they head into whatever lies ahead.
