Two Bridges Regional Jail Commander Mark Westrum has been offered his job back if he first serves a 60-day unpaid suspension  The Two Bridges Regional Jail Authority agreed to make the offer at the Jan. 11 meeting of the Two Bridges Regional Jail Authority.

Westrum has been on paid administrative leave since he was arrested on an Aggravated OUI charge on Oct. 6, 2016. On Jan. 4, he took a deferred disposition, knocking the charge down to a simple OUI charge as long as he meets certain conditions, including continuing treatment and meetings for substance abuse, refraining from any other criminal activity, and agreeing to searches of his home and car by law enforcement as requested, according to court documents.

An Aggravated OUI conviction would have required at least two days in jail. A simple OUI guilty plea involves a $500 fine and a 150-day license suspension.

After a more than one-hour executive session, the Authority agreed to keep Westrum on as administrator if he serves a 60-day unpaid suspension. The vote was 11-1, with Todd McPhee of Woolwich voting against the agreement.

The suspension begins Jan. 12, according to Authority Chairman Mary Trescot. Westrum would be back on the job in mid-March.
