The Wiscasset Bay Gallery is hosting an evening reception on Thursday, July 10, from 5 to 7 p.m., which is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. The reception coincides with the opening of “Andrew Winter and His Contemporaries” and will continue the gallery’s celebration of its 30th season. The show will be on display through August 15.

Featured in the exhibition is a group of oil paintings by Andrew Winter (American, 1893-1958) including “Morning Haul off Manana.” This energetic painting depicts several fishermen bringing in their catch on a winter's day as a group of seagulls flock to the dory, their white forms set against the deep blue ocean. Other works include "Fog Lifting, Monhegan Island" and "Ram Island Light in Winter." Contrasting the stark nature of Andrew Winter's paintings is the rich and lush rendition of a Georgetown marsh in "Spinney's Mill Marsh" by John Fulton Folinsbee (American, 1892-1972). With impressionistic brushstrokes and bold colors, Folinsbee captures the summer marsh grasses with a view out to the water beyond.

The exhibition will also highlight several works on paper by DeHirsch Margules (American, 1899-1965). These playful and colorful paintings depict sailboats on the ocean, their forms captured with quick strokes of paint, bright color and simple shapes. Joseph DeMartini's (American, 1896-1984) abstract, thickly painted oil entitled "Nude" portrays a female figure seated serenely in a chair in the middle of the canvas, her form block-like, her face blank of features, while John Whorf's (American, 1903-1959) watercolor, "By the Stream," depicts a female nude awash in dappled sunlight, bathing at the edge of a woodland stream. Paintings by noted American artists William Lester Stevens, Stephen Etnier, William Thon, Stow Wengenroth, Abraham Bogdanove, and William and Marguerite Zorach will also be on display.

Contemporary highlights include colorful still life paintings by Geer Morton, Ann Getsinger and Marjorie Moskowitz, and coastal and inland Maine views by Keith Oehmig, Michael Graves, Tom McCobb, Don Stone, Guy Corriero, Tom Curry, Diana Johnson, J. Thomas R. Higgins, Paul Niemiec, Judith Magyar, Roberta Goschke, David Kasman and Carlton Plummer.
