Color
Late summer and early fall seemed unusually warm and dry to me. Experience, as a well documented “fall lover,” tells me that this is not a good combination for much color in the trees, which is another nostalgic favorite of mine. But, so far, it seems my past recollections are incorrect — imagine! This fall is turning up some dandy color, in sort of fits and starts, as it were.Autumn color along the shore has always seemed elusive around here, for me at least. There’s something about the... A Walk in the Park
Summer has passed and the quietness of fall has arrived.
Taking a walk around Barrett Park in Boothbay Harbor in the late afternoon of Oct. 1 provided me with a chance to enjoy the beauty of the park without interruption of summer swimmers, loungers, boaters and picnickers.
Four people did enter the park during the hour I was there, but they were there for a peaceful walk as well. There were some remnants of summer, but the evidence of fall colors and bareness is revealed.
As the phrase goes... Read more

Apple season
Haven’t we always had apples? In legend, yes. Many people are happy to tell one another about Adam and Eve in Eden, about Eve’s being tempted by the sneaky snake to eat some fruit from that God-forbidden tree. “An apple!” they say. Yet the story isn’t about an apple, but the “fruit” of the tree. Might it even have been a fig tree? However, apples have bounced through history and myth through the ages, surviving in popularity to this day. They didn’t even grow in the New World until colonists... Read more
