Coming in May

Maine State Music Theatre and six local libraries are collaborating on an interdisciplinary project focused on introducing Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel, Treasure Island to a wider public. Beginning on April 1 and continuing through July 13, Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick, Patten Free Library in Bath, Topsham Public Library, Wiscasset Public Library, Orr’s Island Library, and Cundy’s Harbor ...Library in Harpswell will offer a series of free programs which explore the swashbuckling classic and its relationship to the new musical Treasure Island A Musical Adventure, which will have its East Coast premiere at MSMT on June 26.“We want to introduce family audiences to the story and inspire them to discover or rediscover this outstanding work,” said MSMT Artistic Director Curt Dale Clark. “We hope this project will translate into building a new audience for both the novel and the musical theatre production.”

Together with the libraries, MSMT has coordinated a series of creative programs, including a library display, online reading and materials lists, online complete study guides comparing the novel and the musical, and free events held at each library this spring. In addition, each of the libraries is centering its comprehensive summer reading program on pirates and other related themes and will create a host of entertaining children’s and family activities.

Funding provided in part by the Maine Humanities Council.
