American Legion Post 36 held its third annual yard sale on the Boothbay Common on Saturday, July 21.

“That is how we raise money to fund our programs,” said post commander Dave Patch.

Patch said Legion supporters bring the sale items. Private providers rent space for the sale, he added.

In addition to supporting the Post and local veterans. Patch said the chapter helps high school students attend Boys and Girls State programs at Thomas and Husson Colleges. The Legion also assists area Boy Scouts, he said.

Sixth graders Magen Burge and Lily Nein set up their lemonade stand to raise money for homeless veterans. Last year the two sold enough lemonade to buy a mattress for a homeless veteran who had been sleeping in his car for four years, according to Magen’s grandmother Sue Burge.

“It was their idea,” said Burge. Lemonade proceeds also help schoolmates who cannot afford to go on school trips, she said.

The stand will be set up in front of the Congregational Church starting at 11:30 a.m. on Sundays in good weather to assist the Heifer Project, she said.

Stephanie Hawke set the grill to cook hot dogs and hamburgers for the event.
