American Legion Post 36

Tue, 09/11/2018 - 9:00am

Our American Legion Post is blessed to have tremendous support from our community. Each Legion breakfast we have been joined by nearly 100 folks, and sometimes we even break the 100 mark! And while we have our consistent crew of Legionnaires who make the breakfasts happen, we also have non-Legionnaires who are always reliably there, including Stephanie Hawke and Sara Fahnley. Of course, each breakfast we have the fabulous “Belgian Waffle Station,” staffed by folks from the Boothbay Region Community Resource Council (BRCRC). And, other non-legionnaires Hal Pierce and Alan McLaughlin who never miss in the clean-up after breakfasts. Also, over the past few weeks, non-Legionnaires Matthew Eldridge, Hal Pierce and Hayden Baum volunteered their time and expertise building a storage shed for the Legion. Thanks to all of you for making it possible for our Post to better serve our veterans and our community.

Speaking of our breakfasts, this year, our last breakfast for the season will be Nov. 4. But, we will be having other opportunities for the community to join us at the Legion Hall for great meals and comradery. On Monday, Nov. 12, in honor of Veterans Day, all veterans and their guests in the community are invited to the Hall for dinner. The suggested donation for the dinner will be $15/person. More information will be forthcoming as we plan for this event. Other Hall events are being planned before the end of the year, so stand by.

The veterans in the state of Maine have been extremely fortunate to have Adria Horn as the director of the Maine Bureau of Veterans Services (MBVS). MBVS is a state agency that services the veteran community. Adria has worked tirelessly to ensure that the state’s veteran community receives the support they need. She was a leader in the state’s efforts to end veteran homelessness, end veteran suicides, and increase veteran services through out Maine, even the most rural areas. Maine is fortunate to have many organizations, government and non-profits, that provide services and recreational opportunities for veterans. Adria developed a website that identifies all of those and how to access their services. Check it out www.maine.gov/veterans. Adria has left her position at MBVS to become the vice president of Workforce Development for Tilson Technology Management and we wish her all the best in her new adventure. Adria will be replaced by David Richmond, who has been Adria’s assistant. David is a veteran and has a long history of supporting our veteran community. Working with David is our own Sarah Sherman. We will miss Adria but it is great to know we have David and Sarah to help all veterans navigate the government system.

Please join us at our next breakfast Sept. 23.
