Bayville Buzz: The Waterfront Festival highlights

Tue, 08/14/2018 - 1:00pm

My phone started getting texts, then phone calls. The national networks wanted me to get them an exclusive on the feel good news of the year — Phil Roberts was going swimming off the town dock. I sent out my entire staff of reporters, this was the story that was going to change my career and get me the recognition I deserved. We’re talking a possible Pulitzer.

The news continued to pour in. Not only was Phil headed to the bay for his swim but he was clad in a patriotic red, white and blue speedo that Karen gave him for Christmas. The lobster floatie was also a nice touch. This was going to be big.

We were about to go live when there was sudden pandemonium at the dock. Word quickly spread that there had been some sort of wardrobe malfunction and that the feel good story had taken an ugly turn. The networks cut my feed and I chose not to investigate any further. My dream was crushed in an instant. It is my understanding that if you wish, you can read more details in the Bayville Enquirer on sale now.

    Well there is other news...

Phil wasn’t the only one swimming. The water had been amazingly warm. It seems people were swimming everywhere, off docks, floats and boats, taking advantage of water temps well into the 70s. When the wind shifted Friday the temperatures dropped quickly, but did rebound nicely on Saturday, just in time for The Waterfront Festival.

Before getting to that, let’s talk Pickleball. Despite the early start, a record crowd lined the two courts and was on hand to witness the championship duo of Mark Spencer and John Merrill make quick work of all of their foes. Their spins and overheads dazzled the crowd and left opponents breathless.

Will Allison, nursing some injuries from his recent ultra marathon was recruited from the crowd and proceeded to pull his calf muscle trying to get to a Ginger Robitaille match winning shot. His partner, Rick Coleman, walked off in disbelief. Will hobbled off. Ginger has graciously donated all of her third place prize money towards Will’s medical bills. Look for Will in some sort of disguise the next time he is town.

That was the only downside to a great visit with Will and his family — wife Jillian and sons Aidan and William. Cousins JJ and Brian and Liam McNamara rounded out the “kid” contingent. All the siblings were there and husband Pat too, so it was full house.

The weather was threatening to put a damper on the Waterfront Festival but the rain held off until just after the events ended. Proof that Bayvillians aren’t the only ones who are watching the proceedings.

As with any production of this size, there were some glitches and controversies. The opening  ceremonies were delayed but in the end the sea plane and boat flotilla arrived in perfect synchronization. JJ Allison and Brian McNamara led the boat parade and the pilot prefers to remain anonymous, but did an outstanding job. The only thing missing was the submarine. Maybe next year.

This year’s competition saw an international contingent from around the world vying for the glory and honor of Ruler of the Sea.

The kids started off events with a scavenger hunt that brought them throughout the village.

The blindfolded rowing kicked off the adult competition and it lived up to the hype of entertainment and drama. After Will’s debacle on the Pickleball Court, the Allisons looked for redemption as my son and I competed in separate boats. Unfortunately, we both had defective oar locks (that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it) and after 5 minutes of intense rowing my captain, nephew William Allison informed me to remove my blind fold as we were out of the running. I was shocked to see that after all that effort we had barely left the dock. But wait, where was JJ, could he and his crew of cousin Liam be in first behind the island? No, I was looking in the wrong direction. He was somehow behind us! Diana Frascella and Bill LaPointe cruised to an impressive victory.

Kids and adults traded off various events and had a fun time.

Obviously, the obligations and personal appearances required as reigning Ruler of the Sea were a bit too much for a teen age kid as Emma Collins decided to sit out most events. She did however, compete in the event to end all events — the Triathlon. There she edged out this year’s champion Matt Frascella, in a great race. My view point from the rear of the field wasn’t great, but I did get a good look as they lapped me on the swim course.

The expected duel for the crown being decided on the last event wasn’t to be, as Chris Coleman decided to watch the final event from the comfort - and safety - of shore.

There was some controversy this year as Matt won musical chairs with an aggressiveness not seen since the Great White episode on Shark Week. The final pairing pitted the experience of Smokey Stover vs. the enthusiasm of Matt. When the sand settled, Smokey was on the ground and Matt in the chair. The Russian judge, who was used to reffing soccer, ruled that Smokey took a dive hoping for sympathy.

BSN (Bayville Sports Network), has since reviewed the tape and come back with a different opinion, but even without that win, Matt dominated the field and is without question, Ruler of the Sea 2018. Congratulations Matt! Thanks to all who participated and who came out to watch.

Next week’s column will have more details on the proceedings as well as many thanks to all the wonderful people who made it all happen.

Just as a heads up, stay tuned for an upcoming Buzz where Phil will be guest columnist to exact his revenge.
