“Demons, Dances, and Dreams,” a show of Bernadette de Cesare´s layered, visionary dreamscapes opens on Friday, May 24 at the Green Lion Gallery, 104 Front Street, Bath.  There will be a reception for the artist that day from 5-7 p.m.  The show will be on display through June 16.

De Cesare says of her work:  “I´m a visionary artist, a visual storyteller and an intuitive painter.  My art gives me joyful surprises as well as artistic discomfort.”  She worked mostly in oil and acrylic until about a decade ago when she discovered pastel as a medium and fell in love with it.  Working in pastel encourages the direct eye-to-hand connection that animates her work, and makes it easier to achieve the deeply layered colors and varied textures of her intuitive images.

Her work weaves symbolic imagery and mystical connections into visual stories derived from home life, portraits, and landscape.  The results are complex, richly colorful, and partly - sometimes completely - abstract.  They reflect de Cesare´s ever-changing world where, as she says, “the realm of the subconscious is part of the journey.”

Bernadette  De Cesare was born in Brooklyn and grew up in the New York City area.  She also lived in Maryland and California, and spent many summers on Cape Cod.  These experiences, along with extensive travels around the U.S., Mexico, and Europe have all contributed to the stories and images in her work.

She graduated from the Parsons School of Design into the kaleidoscopic New York art world of the 1960’s and 1970’s, supporting herself as a fashion illustrator and graphic designer as her own art developed.  She has received international recognition as a pastel artist, including membership and numerous jury selections in the Pastel Society of America, and her work has been shown in several venues in the New York City area and elsewhere around the country.  She has received several awards and her work has been published in three books.

She moved to Maine in 2017 with her husband, artist and illustrator Bob Morello, to be closer to family as well as to Maine’s creative possibilities.  As she says, “I love finding my place among Maine’s strong art community.  It’s a welcome challenge, and living in coastal Maine is truly amazing.”
