What is it like to study the ocean at a world-class research institute? Find out on Friday, July 20, when Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences hosts its annual open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on its East Boothbay campus.

Laboratory scientists and staff have prepared a wide range of demonstrations and activities, where visitors of all ages will be introduced to robotic research aides, meet some of the smallest sea life on the planet, and learn about Bigelow Laboratory’s research around the world.

“One of the things that makes Bigelow Laboratory special is the community that supports our work,” said Deborah Bronk, president and CEO of Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. "It is a privilege to open our doors and share the cutting-edge science we do here with this incredible community.”

A full schedule of opportunities will allow visitors to get hands-on experience with ocean science, and a series of short talks will provide an in-depth look at the Laboratory’s research. Visitors can try out oceanographic research equipment and use microscopes to view live plankton collected from the dock. Scientists will give short presentations covering topics from how the Laboratory tests for biotoxins in seafood to its collection of marine algae, which is the largest and most diverse in the world.

This event is free and open to the public. Community members of all ages are invited to attend and be a part of the exceptional ocean science conducted at Bigelow Laboratory. See the full schedule of activities and talks at www.bigelow.org/openhouse.
