Boothbay Harbor elections, town meeting preview

    On Friday, May 4, polls will be open at the Boothbay Harbor Town Office from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for voters to decide by secret ballot a moderator for the annual town meeting (Article 1) and seven town positions (Article 2). Voters will also choose whether or not to “accept the alewife fishing rights pursuant to DMR rules on West Harbor Pond for the year 2019 and that said pond shall remain closed for conservation” (Article 3).

    Incumbents Wendy Wolf, board of selectmen chair, Steve Lorrain Sr., trustee for Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor CSD Board, and Stephanie Hawke, vice chair for Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor CSD School Committee, are running unopposed for their seats, all three-year terms.

    Vacant positions (all candidates running unopposed): Isabelle Lewis, Cemetery District Board of Trustees, three-year term; Nell Tharpe, at-large position on the Boothbay Region Water District Board of Trustees, three-year term; James Stormont, Boothbay Harbor Sewer District Board of Trustees, three-year term; Sam Morris, Boothbay Harbor Sewer District Board of Trustees, two-year term. The Boothbay Harbor Sewer District elections will appear on a separate ballot.

    The annual town meeting will begin the following day (Saturday, May 5) at 9 a.m. at Boothbay Region Elementary School. Voters will decide another 19 articles on the town warrant including the usual authorizations for municipal officers, tax rate particulars, and budget items including appropriating estimated revenues of $1,100,146 to reduce the property tax commitment; raising $2,901,852 for the remainder of municipal accounts; and $1,037,678 for lights, hydrants, refuse, and Bayville/Isle of Springs accounts; and $376,672 for support organizations.

    Voters will also decide whether or not to amend the current Peace and Good Order Ordinance adding that private fireworks be advertised two weeks ahead of time. The last two articles address an amendment to minimum setbacks on Route 27 and to minimum land area per dwelling unit in the Downtown Business District.
