What’s on your summer to-do list that you haven’t accomplished yet?

My list is always overly ambitious, so August leaves me feeling like I’d better take the rest of the month off so I can get going on it. Kind of like the way I feel in March, when I realize that I haven’t accomplished any of my New Year’s resolutions.

If one of your goals was to catch a movie on the lawn with us, you have a few more chances. On Friday, Aug. 10, we’re showing “I Know a Man…Ashley Bryan” at 8 p.m. It’s the true story of an amazing children’s book author and illustrator who lives out on Little Cranberry Island.

The Portland Museum of Art is hosting a special exhibit of Bryan’s work through Nov. 25.  You can call the library to reserve a museum pass to see Bryan’s work for free. A documentary and an art exhibit! That should be on all of our summer bucket lists.

Have you been hoping to catch some live music outdoors this summer? We’ve got you covered there, too. The Hallowell Band performs every Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in August and Ragtime Jack will perform on Friday, Aug. 17 from 6 to 7 p.m.

Ragtime Jack is a master of traditional country blues and stride piano and a powerful singer/songwriter. He also accompanies himself on the guitar and harmonica, and has lately added the fiddle to his arsenal of musical weapons.

We’re following his performance with a showing of “The Sting” at 8 p.m., so grab some ice cream or takeout and join us for that, too. With Paul Newman, Robert Redford, and a timeless ragtime soundtrack, it’s a classic that you shouldn’t miss.

Maybe you were hoping to get your teenager one step closer to college this summer? Well then Snapchat them a reminder to be at the library from 3:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15, for a full-length, timed SAT practice test. Bring pencils and calculators, and we’ll provide the rest.

Don’t let them miss their last chance to work with college admissions counselor Jane Watkins on Tuesday, Aug. 28, either. She’s holding open office hours from 2 to 6 p.m. in our upstairs Community Room to help your rising senior get started on their college applications and essays.

Have you been hoping to spend a day at the beach or hiking on Maine’s trails? Then check our Maine State Parks pass and head to Popham Beach, Reid State Park, or any one of Maine State Parks for a day of fun.

And, of course, if your summer goal is to sit outside on your deck with a good book and get lost in its pages, the library is always here for you. So come on in, grab a bestseller, mystery, non-fiction, or whatever floats your boat, and enjoy the last few weeks of summer in Maine. It just doesn’t get any better than this.
