I don’t care what the calendar says: winter in Maine officially ends the first day that those bright orange “Heavy Loads Limited” signs go up on telephone poles.

So happy spring, folks! We’ve got lots of fun stuff planned here at the Library to keep us all busy while we wait for the snow to melt and yard cleanup to begin.

On Saturday, April 14, the Refreshing the Whodunit book group will meet in the Great Room at 10:30 a.m. to discuss “The Skull Mantra” by Eliot Pattison. This series is sponsored and facilitated by the Maine Humanities Council, and discussions have been fun and interesting. We have more than a dozen copies of Pattison’s book at the Library available for check out, so give it a try.

The local schools have spring break during the third week in April this year. BHML will offer a nifty program called RoboPots on Thursday, April 19 and Friday, April 20. It’s brought to us by Gizmo Garden, a nonprofit organization based in Nobleboro. Over the course of the two days, kids will build a robotic, self-watering plant pot. They’ll sculpt a pot from clay, wire up the water pump, timer, and power supply, assemble the plumbing, decorate the pots, and take a look at the coding that runs the system. No prior experience with electronics or coding required (though a basic knowledge of how to work with clay will come in handy!). On Saturday, April 21, we’re hosting the second annual Earth Day Fest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If it’s not raining and all the snow has melted, we’ll be out on the lawn. We’ve got crafts, fun, and education for kids and adults, including a presentation called Animal Adaptations from Chewonki at 11 a.m.

Finally, April is poetry month, so come by to read and share your favorite poems.
